Our History

Improving patients’ quality of life is central to Horus Pharma’s DNA
Horus Pharma was founded on the French Riviera, between Sophia Antipolis and Monaco. After several years in R&D, business development and the management of pharmaceutical companies, founders Martine and Claude Claret, two pharmacists with a passion for ophthalmology, decided to take the plunge, driven by their desire for independence and their commitment to advancing eye health through rigour and innovation.
They founded their own company, dedicated entirely to ophthalmology. The name they chose was inspired by Horus, the Egyptian god whose left eye was believed to have healing powers: a reference that reflects their ambition to preserve vision.

20 years of innovation for eye health
- 2003
It all began in 2003, when Horus Pharma stood out by developing the first preservative-free hyaluronic acid drops for dry eye.

- 2006
In 2006, a key milestone was reached when the treatment became eligible for reimbursement by the French national health insurance system, a first for a pharmaceutical company and a testament to our commitment to accessible healthcare.

- 2008
In 2008, we established operations in Paris at the Institut de la Vision, one of Europe’s leading ophthalmology research centres, further strengthening our ties with academic research and healthcare professionals. This environment strengthens our scientific expertise and guides Horus Pharma’s future developments.

- 2010
2010 marked the beginning of Horus Pharma’s international expansion with its first distribution partnerships abroad. This momentum culminated in 2015 with the opening of our first subsidiary in Spain, further establishing our presence in Europe.

- 2018
In 2018, two major launches strengthened Horus Pharma’s positioning in segments neglected by the pharmaceutical industry: lyophilised amniotic membranes and an intravitreal implant for patients with diabetic macular oedema.

- 2023
2023 opened a new chapter for Horus Pharma: selected for ETincelles, a government programme and a true springboard for SMEs, the company launched Clarté Laboratoire. This new entity dedicated to eye and facial contour care, developed from ophthalmological research, offers a range of high-end cosmetic products.

- 2024
In 2024, Horus Pharma strengthened its holistic approach to eye health with the creation of dulcis health science, a scientific research laboratory specialising in dietary supplements designed to support eye health and products for eyelid hygiene and care aimed at improving patients’ quality of life.

What sets us apart: products covering the full spectrum of eye conditions
Now the second-largest independent pharmaceutical company in France and a major player in Europe, Horus Pharma has built recognised expertise in innovations that combine efficacy and safety, offering advanced solutions and preservative-free product ranges.
Thanks to our five product categories (medicines, medical devices, human tissues, dietary supplements and cosmetics), our products cover the full range of ophthalmology-related needs, including in niche segments.
Every day, 240 employees now work to bring our 70 products to market. Among them, 20 pharmacists and three ophthalmologists help our sales force better understand the needs of healthcare professionals and their patients. Each year, we devote 10% of our revenue to research and the development of new solutions.
The status of human tissues:
a distinctive feature of Horus Pharma
Horus Pharma is the only ophthalmic pharmaceutical company in France authorised by the ANSM* to distribute human tissues.
Derived from the human placenta and containing growth factors, lyophilised amniotic membranes are recovered by caesarean section or vaginal delivery and treated through double viral inactivation and sterilisation to eliminate any risk of contamination. Thanks to their healing properties, they are used in many surgical indications in ophthalmology.
*ANSM: Agence Nationale de Sécurité des Médicaments et des produits de santé / National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products
